Small Copper
Lycaena phlaeas

The adult Small Copper is a fast, low-flying butterfly of sunny grasslands, heathland, dunes, road verges, and flower-rich field margins. It drinks nectar from small flowers and males often perch in warm spots before darting out to investigate passing insects. Its copper-orange forewings act as both display and warning coloration during close encounters. This species can produce several broods in a warm year, allowing adults to appear across much of the spring-to-autumn season.
