Meadow Spittlebug
Philaenus spumarius

The adult meadow spittlebug is common in grasslands, hedgerows, gardens, and weedy field edges across much of the Palearctic and introduced regions. It feeds on sap from many different plants and escapes danger with powerful jumps, short flights, and mottled camouflage. Adults vary widely in colour, from pale brown to dark patterned forms, which helps them blend into stems and leaves. A notable fact is that this species can spread the plant bacterium Xylella fastidiosa while feeding.
