Rough Barnacle
Balanus balanus

Adult rough barnacles live permanently fixed to rocks, shells, pilings, and other hard surfaces in cold marine waters. They extend feathery feeding limbs from their calcareous shell to filter plankton from passing water. When threatened or exposed at low tide, the shell plates clamp tightly shut to retain moisture and deter predators.
