Fiery Searcher
Calosoma scrutator

This iridescent ground beetle patrols forests, fields, and garden edges, often searching at night or during cool weather. It is an active predator of caterpillars, moth pupae, and other insects, which it seizes with strong mandibles. Adults can climb vegetation and fly to new hunting grounds when necessary. A threatened beetle may release a sharp-smelling defensive chemical from its abdomen.
