Red Postman
Heliconius erato
Red Postman butterflies inhabit sunny tropical forest margins, riversides, and flower-rich clearings from Central America into northern South America. Adults fly steadily through the understory, visiting flowers for nectar and collecting pollen that can supplement their diet. Their bold red-and-black wing pattern advertises chemical protection, and they commonly roost communally beneath vegetation at night.
