Great Plains Toad
Anaxyrus cognatus

Great Plains Toads inhabit prairies, grasslands, agricultural areas, and open woodland, often emerging after heavy rains. They are nocturnal ambush hunters that eat beetles, ants, crickets, and other ground-dwelling invertebrates. For much of the year, they avoid heat and drought by burrowing backward into loose soil with their hind feet.
