Highland Midge Larva

Culicoides impunctatus (larva)

Highland Midge Larva

The larva lives in wet peat, bog pools, marshy soil, and other saturated Highland habitats. It wriggles through films of water and soft organic matter, feeding on microbes, algae, and decaying plant material rather than blood. Its slender body stays hidden among silt and moss, where moisture is essential for survival. This stage can be abundant in damp ground that later produces clouds of adult midges.
