Non-Biting Midge
Chironomus plumosus

The adult is a delicate, mosquito-like fly found around lakes, wetlands, and rivers, but it lacks the piercing mouthparts needed to bite. Adults feed little if at all and live mainly to mate and lay egg masses back onto the water. Males often gather in dancing aerial groups, while females seek suitable water where the next generation can hatch. A notable feature is the feathery antennae of males, which help detect the wingbeats of females.
