Non-Biting Midge Larva

Chironomus plumosus (larva)

Non-Biting Midge Larva

The larva lives in the muddy bottoms of ponds, lakes, canals, and slow rivers, often inside a silk-lined tube in the sediment. It feeds on detritus, algae, and tiny organic particles drawn from the water and mud. Its red color comes from hemoglobin-like pigments that help it survive in oxygen-poor water, earning larvae like this the name “bloodworms.”
