Common House Mosquito Larva
Culex pipiens (larva)
This aquatic larva lives in still or slow water such as buckets, ditches, ponds, and rain-filled containers. It hangs near the surface to breathe through a siphon while filtering algae, bacteria, and tiny organic particles. When disturbed, it jerks downward with quick wriggling movements. A notable feature is that this stage has no wings and is entirely dependent on water.
