American Eel Leptocephalus Larva
Anguilla rostrata (leptocephalus larva)

American eel leptocephali drift in the open ocean of the western North Atlantic after hatching in the Sargasso Sea. Their transparent, leaf-shaped bodies feed chiefly on marine snow and other suspended organic particles. As they are carried toward continental waters, they gradually transform into the cylindrical glass-eel form; this larva looks remarkably unlike the adult eel.
