American Eel
Anguilla rostrata

The American eel is a long, snake-like fish of rivers, streams, ponds, estuaries, and coastal waters of eastern North America. It hides by day among rocks, vegetation, mud, or submerged debris, then hunts at night for insects, crustaceans, worms, small fish, and carrion. Its slick, muscular body lets it squeeze through tight cover and even cross damp ground for short distances. A notable fact is its catadromous life cycle: adults migrate from freshwater or brackish habitats to the Sargasso Sea to spawn.
