Atlantic Horseshoe Crab Juvenile
Limulus polyphemus (juvenile)

Juvenile Atlantic horseshoe crabs inhabit protected bays, estuaries, and shallow sandy or muddy flats along the Atlantic coast. They crawl through and over the sediment, feeding on small worms, mollusks, and other buried invertebrates. As they grow, juveniles repeatedly molt their hard outer shell, leaving behind a larger empty exoskeleton after each molt.
