Barred Owl Hatchling
Strix varia (hatchling)

A Barred Owl hatchling spends its early life in a tree cavity or broken-top nest site in mature woodland near swamps, streams, or dense forest. It is covered in pale down, depends completely on adults for warmth and food, and feeds on small prey brought back to the nest. Its main defenses are staying hidden, fluffing up, and giving raspy begging or alarm calls. A notable fact is that young owls can clamber around the nest with their beak and feet before they are able to fly.
