Barred Owl
Strix varia

The adult Barred Owl lives in mature forests, wooded wetlands, and riparian woods across much of eastern North America and parts of the Pacific Northwest. It hunts mostly at night or dusk, waiting quietly on a perch before dropping onto rodents, birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish, and large insects. Soft-edged flight feathers help it approach prey with very little sound, making ambush its signature hunting style. A notable fact is its famous hooting call, often rendered as “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all?”
