Grey Heron Juvenile
Ardea cinerea (juvenile)

A juvenile Grey Heron has duller grey-brown plumage and less contrast on the head than a breeding adult. It forages along marshes, riverbanks, lakes, and muddy shorelines, learning to stand motionless before striking at fish, frogs, crustaceans, insects, and small mammals. Juveniles fly strongly but are less experienced hunters and may make more clumsy approaches to prey. Their independence develops gradually after leaving the nest, with stalking skill improving through practice.
