Common Crane Fly Pupa
Tipula paludosa (pupa)

The pupa rests in the soil after the larval stage, enclosed in a firmer outer case while the adult body forms inside. It does not feed, relying on stored energy gathered as a larva. When ready to emerge, it wriggles upward through the soil until part of the pupal case reaches the surface. Small spines and body movements help it anchor and push through loose earth.
