Common Crane Fly Larva
Tipula paludosa (larva)

This soil-dwelling larva lives in damp grassland, lawns, and pasture, usually hidden among roots and leaf litter. It feeds mostly on grass roots, seedlings, and decaying plant material, becoming most active in moist conditions. Its tough, grey-brown skin gives it the name “leatherjacket” and helps protect it while it tunnels through soil. Although harmless to people, large numbers can damage turf by chewing plant roots underground.
