Large Black Ground Beetle
Pterostichus niger

The adult Large Black Ground Beetle inhabits damp woodland floors, hedgerows, grasslands, and gardens, usually hiding beneath logs or stones by day. It emerges mainly at night to hunt insects, worms, slugs, and other small invertebrates with powerful mandibles. Its glossy black wing covers protect it as it pushes through soil and leaf litter, and it can release defensive chemicals when threatened.
