Texas Spiny Lizard Hatchling
Sceloporus olivaceus (hatchling)

Newly hatched Texas spiny lizards keep low among leaf litter, bark, fence posts, and rough stones where their mottled colors help them disappear. They feed on tiny insects and other small arthropods, taking short dashes from cover rather than ranging far. At this stage they are especially vulnerable to birds, snakes, and larger lizards, so freezing in place is often their best defense. Even as hatchlings, their rough scales already give the spiny texture that the species is known for.
