Mountain Cottontail Kit
Sylvilagus nuttallii (kit)
Newborn mountain cottontail kits stay hidden in a shallow fur-lined nest, relying on stillness and sparse visits from the mother to avoid predators. They feed entirely on milk at first and begin nibbling tender plants as they grow. Their eyes open after several days, and their mottled brown fur helps them disappear among dry grasses and sagebrush litter.
