Gray Hairstreak
Strymon melinus
The adult Gray Hairstreak inhabits gardens, meadows, roadsides, and other sunny open areas. It drinks nectar from flowers and may also take moisture and minerals from damp ground. Its hindwing tails and orange-and-black markings form a false head, drawing attacks away from the real head while the butterfly rests with closed wings.
