Dead Leaf Mantis
Deroplatys desiccata
The adult dead leaf mantis inhabits tropical forest understory, where it rests among dry leaves and twigs. It is an ambush predator that captures insects and other small arthropods with rapid strikes of its raptorial forelegs. Its broad, leaf-shaped body and wings provide remarkably convincing camouflage, while adults can flash their wings in a defensive display when disturbed.
