Red Grasshawk Nymph

Neurothemis fluctuans (nymph)

Red Grasshawk Nymph

The nymph lives underwater in ponds, marshy drains, and slow vegetated pools where the adult species breeds. It waits among mud, plant stems, and detritus, ambushing mosquito larvae, small aquatic insects, and other tiny prey with a rapid extendable lower lip. Like other dragonfly nymphs, it breathes through internal gills and can move by pushing water from the body. This stage is compact and secretive, relying more on concealment and sudden grabs than open speed.
