Virginia Rail
Rallus limicola
The Virginia Rail inhabits freshwater marshes thick with cattails, sedges, and other emergent plants. It slips through narrow passages in the vegetation, probing mud and shallow water for insects, crustaceans, snails, and seeds. Its laterally compressed body lets it navigate dense reeds with remarkable ease, and it is more often heard than seen.
