Virginia Rail Chick
Rallus limicola (chick)
Covered in black down, a Virginia Rail chick stays concealed in dense cattails and sedges around shallow marshes. It follows its parents closely while picking small insects, spiders, and other tiny aquatic invertebrates from wet vegetation. Despite its small size, it can leave the nest soon after hatching and moves quickly through thick cover.
