Rainbow Trout Alevin
Oncorhynchus mykiss (alevin)

Rainbow trout alevins remain hidden in clean, oxygen-rich gravel after hatching in cold streams. They feed from a visible yolk sac rather than hunting in open water, making concealment more important than pursuit. Their delicate bodies are vulnerable to silt, low oxygen, and disturbance of the nest gravel. A notable fact is that this stage can survive for weeks without external food while the yolk sac is absorbed.
