Lewis's Woodpecker Hatchling
Melanerpes lewis (hatchling)

Newly hatched Lewis's Woodpeckers remain hidden inside a tree cavity in open woodland, riparian groves, or burned pine forest. They are naked to sparsely downy at first and depend completely on adults for warmth and food. Their diet is delivered as insects and other soft items brought back to the nest. A notable fact is that cavity nesting gives the helpless chicks protection from many weather and predator threats.
