Lewis's Woodpecker
Melanerpes lewis

Adult Lewis's Woodpeckers live in open ponderosa pine woods, oak savannas, cottonwood groves, orchards, and burned forests with standing dead trees. They often hunt by sallying from a perch to snatch flying insects, but also eat berries, nuts, and acorns. Adults nest in cavities, frequently using existing holes or softened dead wood rather than heavy excavation. A notable fact is that they store acorns and other food in bark crevices, giving them a more crow-like foraging style than many woodpeckers.
