American Toad Toadlet
Anaxyrus americanus (toadlet)

Newly transformed American toad toadlets leave the water for damp soil, leaf litter, and grassy pond edges. They hunt tiny insects and other small invertebrates with short hops and quick tongue strikes. Their parotoid glands and warty skin are developing, giving them a growing chemical defense against predators. At this stage they must avoid drying out while dispersing from their natal pond.
