Herring Gull Juvenile
Larus argentatus (juvenile)

A brown, heavily mottled young gull that ranges along beaches, harbours, lakes, rubbish tips, and fields after fledging. It is a restless scavenger and learner, probing, pecking, and following feeding opportunities while gradually improving its flight control. Its diet is broad, including fish, worms, shellfish, carrion, insects, and human food waste. Juveniles take several years to gain the clean grey-and-white adult plumage, so their brown pattern is a clear sign of immaturity.
