Carolina Anole Hatchling
Anolis carolinensis (hatchling)
Newly hatched Carolina anoles are tiny, independent lizards that hide among low leaves, grasses, and bark in warm southeastern habitats. They feed on very small insects and other minute arthropods, relying on quick darts rather than strength. Their green or brown coloration helps them avoid birds, larger lizards, and spiders. Like adults, they can cling well to vegetation using enlarged toe pads.
