Carolina Anole Juvenile
Anolis carolinensis (juvenile)

Juveniles spend much of their time on shrubs, fences, saplings, and garden plants where small prey is abundant. They hunt ants, flies, tiny moths, and other insects with rapid lunges from a perch. Young anoles are especially vulnerable, so they stay close to cover and often freeze or change shade to blend into leaves and stems. As they grow, males begin practicing head-bob and dewlap displays used in territorial encounters.
