Japanese Fire-bellied Newt Larva
Cynops pyrrhogaster (larva)
This aquatic larva lives in still ponds, rice paddies, and slow forest waters. It hunts small aquatic invertebrates, including insect larvae and tiny crustaceans, using its developing jaws. External gills behind the head allow it to breathe underwater before metamorphosis.
