Papilio xuthus (pupa)
The pupa is usually fixed upright to a twig or stem by a silk pad and a supporting silk girdle. It does not feed, relying on stored energy while the adult butterfly forms inside. Its green or brown color often matches the surrounding plant material, making stillness and camouflage its main defense. If disturbed, it may twitch slightly, but it is otherwise a quiet, vulnerable stage.
