Eastern Grey Squirrel Kit
Sciurus carolinensis (kit)
Eastern grey squirrel kits are born in leaf nests or tree cavities, blind, mostly hairless, and fully dependent on their mother. As they grow, they begin climbing around the nest area and tasting the seeds, buds, and soft plant foods brought or found nearby. Young squirrels are vulnerable to cold, falls, and predators such as hawks, snakes, and raccoons. A notable feature is their rapid development: within a few months they can move through trees with the agility of an adult.
