Large Flying Fox Pup
Pteropus vampyrus (pup)

A large flying fox pup is born in tropical forest roosts and spends its earliest weeks clinging to its mother’s belly while she travels. It feeds entirely on milk at first, later beginning to taste fruit pulp as it grows stronger. Young pups call frequently when separated and practice stretching and flapping their wing membranes before they can fly well. A single pup is the usual birth, making parental care especially important.
