California Ground Squirrel Pup
Otospermophilus beecheyi (pup)
Young California ground squirrel pups remain close to the natal burrow in grasslands, open oak woodland, and disturbed fields. They feed on tender green plants, seeds, and small pieces of fruit while learning to forage above ground. Pups are vulnerable to snakes, raptors, and mammalian predators, so they rely heavily on quick retreats into burrow entrances. A notable early behavior is practicing alarm responses by freezing or diving underground when adults call.
