Equus excelsus

Equus excelsus

Equus excelsus

Equus excelsus lived across open grasslands, savannas, and wooded river valleys in prehistoric North America. It grazed on grasses and browsed selectively on shrubs and other vegetation. Alert adults used keen senses and sustained speed to evade predators, defending themselves with powerful kicks and bites when cornered. Fossil evidence indicates it was a large, horse-like member of the equid family.
