Large White Caterpillar
Pieris brassicae (caterpillar)
Large White caterpillars live on cabbages, nasturtiums, mustards, and other cruciferous plants in gardens, fields, and rough grassland. They feed openly on leaves, often in groups when young and more singly as they grow. Their yellow, black, and green pattern advertises a bitter chemical defense gained from their food plants. A hungry brood can skeletonize cabbage leaves quickly, which is why this stage is well known to gardeners.
