Large White Chrysalis
Pieris brassicae (chrysalis)

The chrysalis is usually fixed by silk to a stem, wall, fence, or other sheltered surface near the caterpillar's food plant. It does not feed, instead surviving on stored energy while the body reorganizes into the adult butterfly. Its angular, hardened casing provides protection, and its greenish or brownish color helps it blend with surrounding vegetation or wood. In cold seasons this stage can overwinter before the butterfly emerges.
