Northern Cardinal Hatchling
Cardinalis cardinalis (hatchling)
Newly hatched Northern Cardinals are nearly naked, blind, and confined to a cup nest hidden in shrubs, vine tangles, or low trees. They rely completely on their parents for warmth and food, receiving softened insects and other small invertebrates. Their main behavior is gaping and giving faint begging calls when a parent arrives. A hatchling grows rapidly, beginning to show dark pinfeathers within only a few days.
