Northern Cardinal Fledgling

Cardinalis cardinalis (fledgling)

Northern Cardinal Fledgling

Northern Cardinal fledglings perch in dense cover near the nest while learning short flights and quick hops. They are still fed by the adults, but they begin sampling seeds, berries, and insects on their own. Their plumage is dull brownish with a dark bill that gradually changes color as they mature. This stage is especially vulnerable, so hiding in shrubs and giving contact calls are important survival behaviors.
