Southern Hawker
Aeshna cyanea

The adult Southern Hawker is a strong-flying dragonfly of ponds, woodland edges, gardens, and sheltered lanes. It hunts flying insects in mid-air, often patrolling repeatedly along the same route and making quick turns after prey. Males guard breeding areas, while females insert eggs into damp rotten wood or plant tissue near water. Its blue-green markings and inquisitive hovering make it one of the more recognizable large hawkers.
