Southern Hawker Dragonfly Nymph
Aeshna cyanea (nymph)

The nymph lives underwater in ponds, ditches, and slow weedy margins, hiding among submerged plants and leaf litter. It is an ambush predator, feeding on aquatic insects, tadpoles, and other small animals seized with a rapid extendable mouthpart. Its dull brown-green body helps it stay unnoticed in silt and vegetation. After a long aquatic juvenile period, it climbs from the water to transform into the flying adult.
