Northern Pacific Treefrog Tadpole
Pseudacris regilla (tadpole)

Northern Pacific treefrog tadpoles live in ponds, marsh edges, roadside ditches, and other still or slow water where eggs were laid. They graze on algae, soft plant material, and fine organic debris, using quick tail flicks to escape insects, fish, and other predators. Their mottled bodies help them blend into mud and submerged vegetation. A notable feature of this stage is how rapidly the body changes as legs develop and the tail is gradually absorbed before leaving the water.
