Horned Grebe Chick
Podiceps auritus (chick)

A downy chick lives on freshwater ponds and marshy lakes, often staying close to floating vegetation and the safety of a parent’s back. It feeds on tiny aquatic invertebrates and small morsels passed by adults while practicing short paddles and dives. Its striped head pattern helps break up its outline among reeds and ripples. At this stage it is dependent and more likely to hide or duck under than fight directly.
