Horned Grebe
Podiceps auritus

The adult Horned Grebe breeds on vegetated freshwater lakes and marshes, then winters on coastal bays and open marine water. It dives after small fish, aquatic insects, crustaceans, and other invertebrates, propelling itself with lobed feet set far back on the body. In breeding season it shows golden ear tufts, a dark head, and elaborate splashy courtship displays. Though awkward on land, it is a skilled swimmer and can vanish underwater quickly when threatened.
