California Scrub-Jay Nestling
Aphelocoma californica (nestling)
This downy chick stays hidden in a cup nest built in shrubs, small trees, or oak woodland edges. It depends on adults for insects, soft fruit, and other high-protein foods brought to the nest. Its main behavior is begging loudly and crouching low when disturbed. Like many songbird nestlings, it is altricial, hatching helpless with only sparse down.
