Sand Lizard
Lacerta agilis

Adult sand lizards live in sunny, well-drained places such as heathland, dunes, railway embankments, and sandy grassland with patches of bare ground. They eat insects, spiders, and other small invertebrates, seizing prey with quick bursts from cover. When threatened, they rely on camouflage, rapid retreat, biting if handled, and hiding in burrows or vegetation. Breeding males can turn vivid green along the flanks, and females lay eggs in warm sand so the sun can incubate them.
